HelixMixer was a darknet cryptocurrency mixing service operated by Larry Dean Harmon from 2014 to 2017. Based in Ohio, the platform was designed to obscure the origins of Bitcoin transactions, allowing users—primarily involved in illegal activities like drug trafficking—to launder funds without detection. During its operation, Helix reportedly processed transactions totaling over 354,468 Bitcoin, equivalent to approximately $311 million at the time. The service was notably integrated with Grams, a darknet search engine also run by Harmon, facilitating connections with major darknet markets. Harmon implemented an Application Program Interface (API) that allowed these markets to directly incorporate Helix into their withdrawal systems, enhancing its utility and accessibility. In addition to laundering, Harmon earned commissions and fees from the transactions processed through Helix. On August 18, 2021, Harmon pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering, leading to a sentence of three years in prison for his role in operating HelixMixer.
